  • DU 2019 IRB Example - Phenomenology

Steps to Obtaining DU IRB Approval

    1. Always follow the most recent IRB information from the DU Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) and guidance of your advisor.
    2. Make sure you have your CITI Certification up to date.
    3. Create an account at irbnet.org and upload your CITI Certification.
    4. Complete the Human Subjects Research (HSR) Determination Form to determine which application you need and the timeline for submissions and approval.
    5. Read the application carefully, highlight sections you must do, and make a list of which Appendices you also need to complete.
    6. Confer with your advisor before completing any forms.
    7. Carefully answer every question on the document application. Use highlighting to keep track of what you still have to complete. Do not just paste in your proposal. Tailor your responses. Be very thoughtful about recruitment, consent, and privacy.
    8. Complete all Appendices.
    9. Create examples of your recruitment processes and flyers, interview protocol, and any survey questions, etc.
    10. Complete the semi-redundant online application too.
    11. Wait for your faculty advisor's final approval and irbnet.org signature BEFORE signing and submitting your application.
    12. Sign AND Submit your application.
    13. Breathe and wait patiently.
    14. Fix any revisions.
    15. Approval!
    16. Data Collection
    17. File any amendments and wait for approval before implementing changes.
    18. Get your writing on!
    19. File your final report or for an extension at the end of your project.
    20. Start thinking about future research.

Here is my first Approved Expedited IRB Application including emails about revisions and approval.

    • I originally applied on May 28, 2019. Revisions were sent to me on July 5, I replied and uploaded corrections by July 10, and received my approval letter on July 12, 2019.
    • I did recruitment in early fall, data collection in late fall, data analysis in winter, and did a poster and presentation on January 31, 2020 at our DU 10th Anniversary Gifted Education Conference.
