Children and families involved in the child welfare system have some of the lowest indicators of health and well-being in the United States. These families also concurrently contend with a system that has a long history of racial disproportionality and racially punitive policies and practices. Moreover, child welfare and auxiliary service delivery agencies in this system have been traditionally underresourced and understaffed; the child welfare professionals who work in this system also experience poor outcomes that include lack of professional training, high burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and turnover—all of which can affect the delivery of services to families. As such, my substantive areas of scholarship and research center on addressing systemic challenges in the child welfare system, for both children and families involved in this system and the professionals who work there. To date, my scholarship consists of three distinct but interconnected areas.
