  • Statement of Scholarship and Teaching

  •    As a career practitioner in finance with some added extensive teaching over the past 40 years, I have the goal of integrating theory and practice in the classes I teach.

I have instructed some 230 classes at the undergraduate, masters, and doctorate levels.  At the doctorate level, I have served on twenty three dissertation committees including eleven as chairperson. My research interests have led to the publication of articles and the presentation of professional papers.

In each of my classes, I start by reviewing the assigned homework and presenting the specific topics to be covered that class on PowerPoint slides. Students always know where they are at in the course and the direction of the course throughout the Quarter.  The outline also serves as an excellent study guide for the students to follow in preparations for the exams.

In all of my classes, I have the goal of integrating my professional experience with the instruction in the classroom.  This involves adding my perspectives during lectures and class discussions on the assigned readings and homework. I also add Guest Speakers as much as possible to bring additional viewpoints into the classroom. I have found students want to see the practical relevance of the topics covered in the textbook and class. I also add discussion of current events as they relate to the course.

I also emphasize the importance of class discussions where students can express their opinions.  As a finance professional and professor, I understand the topic is more art than science. For example, there are numerous ways to analyze stock prices and whether a particular company in undervalued, fairly valued, or overvalued.  Thus, I integrate fundamental, technical, and behavioral analysis in the evaluation of securities.  There is no single right answer.

I have enjoyed working with DU students and I am the Faculty Advisor for three student organizations.  I worked with a DCB Graduate Student where we co-authored an article recently published in the Journal of Advances in Economics and Finance, a peer reviewed Journal.
