  • Hiring Notice

On January 1st Colorado’s Equal Pay for Equal Work Act went into effect.  The act necessitated changes to several practices at DU related to the recruitment and hiring of all classifications of employees.  Please be aware of the following:

    • All positions at DU require posting.  This includes all types of student and part-time or temporary positions, overload or additional pay opportunities, and adjuncts roles.  Please see information regarding where to post for the type of position you are hiring in the sections below.
    • All postings will include the full applicable pay range.  Student pay rates for all positions types will typically follow the student employment compensation guidelines.  This will mean an increase in work study pay rates in the FY22 academic year, potentially reducing the number of award hours students have available for work.  We hope to see consistency in pay rates with other funding sources, please keep these rates in mind for planning purposes.
    • All positions require a job description.

Many of you have student employees or request one-time or short term employment payments for various needs.  Please ensure you are preparing a job description and planning for the necessary posting and recruitment of future hires.  If you have any ad hoc opportunities that compensate existing employees for additional work outside their base employment, please contact GSSWAdmin@du.edu so we can help guide you with next steps, as those types of opportunities will generally need to be internally posted moving forward.

We appreciate your attention to these changes.  We will do our best to assist and provide guidance on specific situations as they arise.

  • Hiring

  • Non-Benefited (Non-Work Study Funded) Staff Hires

Non-Benefited employment at DU is paid hourly and may not exceed 1000 hours in a calendar year - funding must be available to request a hire.  All roles that have a possibility of extending beyond 6 months must be posted.

In order to comply with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, all non-benefitted staff roles must have a job description and will be posted and searched with only rare, short-term exceptions which will be made on a case by case basis.  Compensation for non-benefitted staff roles will be determined by the job duties and based on equity within the University and division.  Please contact GSSWAdmin@du.edu with questions and requests for an exceptions to posting will be considered for positions which are certain to be under 6 months of duration.

When you have completed your search process and are ready to hire a non-benefitted staff member to work on a grant or project or in your department in a temporary capacity, please complete the hiring request form below:

    • Individuals may not be university contractors and employees within the same tax year.  Please confirm that your candidte for employment is not also being paid by DU as an independant contractor using their social security number.
    • Be prepared to identify the funding source for the employment, the employee name and DU ID (unless they are new to DU), start and end dates, hourly rate and predicted number of hours per week.

  • Work Study and Other Student Hires

All employment opportunities that are designed to be available ONLY to DU students must be posted on PioneerCareers.  Like other non-benefitted positions, student employees cannot exceed 1000 hours of DU employment across all positions in a calendar year.  Questions about getting started with PioneerCareers?  Supervisors hiring student employees are responsible for submitting the job description to the Office of Student Employment on the internship & job database POC.

Work Study - work study is a need-based federal financial aid award.  Only students who receive a work study award can be employed in a work study position.  Any department, faculty or staff member may create and post a work study position if they have a consistent need for a student employee.  Anyone wishing to have work study support needs to be prepared to act as a supervisor, and is responsible for creating the job description, posting the position on the PioneerCareers website www.du.edu/hireapioneer, and following all guidelines and deadlines related to work study.  When you have successfully searched and selected your work study candidate, please complete the Work Study Hire Form.

Other Student Employment - Departments and faculty members that have funds available or approval to pay student employees directly from a project or departmental budget may also hire student employees.  If you need to hire students to work with your department or project and have funding available, you may develop a job description and post the position on the PioneerCareers website www.du.edu/hireapioneer.

GSSW asks that all work study and other student employee positions follow the DU Student Employee Rate Scale for undergraduate and graduate level students.  Summer gap employment of PhD program level GRAs should be paid at their academic year rate if the summer duties are consistent with their academic year role.  If your position is unique and does not seem to fit the pay rate scale, please consult with GSSWAdmin@du.edu

  • Adjunct Hires

Adjunct employment at DU is paid on a monthly schedule equally split over the term of the contract.  Course Instructors, course developers, field liaisons, off-site supervisors, faculty teaching overload and  professional development instructors may all be considered Adjuncts.

Typically only a few departments or individuals will be responsible for requesting adjunct hires and changes....you know who you are!  Most adjuncts are hired based on information provided to the Business Operations office in a quarterly spreadsheeet.  If changes are needed after that information has been provided, please use the form below to cancel or update a contract you've asked us to issue.  You may also use this form to add an adjunct hire outside that quarterly data provision cycle.

  • DU Non-Employed Status

  • Special Community Members

Special Community Members are GSSW partners on projects, programs or activities that are NOT employees or students, but require some level of DU systems access to complete their functions for the partnership.  This may include need for a DU email address, building access, access to the library or to software systems.  Special Community Member status requires a background check and must be renewed annually.  Special Community Members must be sponsored by a DU employee and a detailed rationale indicating the need for the status must be noted.  The SCM process is now a workflow in PioneerWeb and both new requests and extension requests can be submitted there.  The sponsor should complete Special Community Member Request Form.  If the individual requires a background check, email the full name and personal email address of the candidate to GSSWAdmin@du.edu

The Special Community Member Request Form is available on PioneerWeb> Employee tab >Administrative Processes box>Hiring folder>Special Community Members and Volunteers folder>Special Community Member form
