Protocol for RMS students; requests for letters of reference from faculty members
When RMS students apply for doctoral programs, fellowships, internships, jobs, and other opportunities they often request letters of reference from faculty. Most of the time, faculty are very happy to do this; however, we want you to be aware of the following expectations :
- Whenever possible, students should give faculty one month notice for letters along with:
- Their CV/resume and, if relevant, a paper that they’ve written for the professor.
- A paragraph about the position/graduate program/opportunity they’re applying for, how many courses they’ve taken, how long they have known the professor, and other information related to why they’re applying such as their letter of interest, etc.
- The name and address of the contact person for the letter.
- Students should understand that a RMS professor may decline their request for a letter for several reasons, including, for example, their limited knowledge of the student’s academic performance, their view of the student’s suitability for the position/program, a short turnaround time for the letter, etc.
