Dr. Montano retired in 2015 from the University of Denver, where he served as Associate Professor and Director of Piano Pedagogy Studies, as well as Coordinator of Group Piano Studies and Principal Graduate Advisor in the Lamont School of Music. His degrees include a Doctor of Musical Arts in music education from the University of Missouri at Kansas City (Conservatory of Music), a Master of Music in piano performance from the University of Arizona at Tucson (School of Music), a M aster of Computer Information Systems from the University of Denver (University College), and a Bachelor of Music in piano performance from Indiana University at Bloomington (Jacobs School of Music). He also holds a Licentiate Performer's Diploma from Trinity College of Music, London (Trinity Guildhall).

Dr. Montano has appeared as soloist with the Lamont Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Concert Orchestra, and has performed in faculty concert programs of the Lamont School of Music.

He has published articles in various publications of the International Society for Music Education (ISME) and MENC--The National Association for Music Education (MENC), and co-authored a textbook for adult keyboard instruction.He has served on the Editorial Committee of the ISME's International Journal of Music Education, on the Advisory Committee of MENC's journal Teaching Music, as Editor of the Colorado Music Educators Association's journal Colorado Music Educator, and as Co-editor of Ars Musica Denver.

He has presented papers at ISME conferences in Zimbabwe, Canada, Italy, China, and Greece, and at conferences of The College Music Society (CMS) (including in Thailand, South Korea, and Argentina), the National Piano Teachers' Institute, the Colorado Music Educators Association (CMEA) (affiliated with MENC), the Colorado State Music Teachers Association (CSMTA) (affiliated with the Music Teachers National Association), and the Missouri Music Educators Association (affiliated with MENC).

His professional leadership service has included a term as Chair of the Council of State Editors for MENC, as well as offices on the boards of CMEA, CSMTA, and CMS's Rocky Mountain Chapter, for which he served a term as President.

Curriculum Vitae

I create Music Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) files of musical ensemble works that include piano parts.  The files are intended to be used in studio teaching, rehearsal, and performance.  Using these MIDI files and an automated-accompaniment system (a hardware/software system that enables a computer performer to synchronize in real time with a human performer), a live pianist can perform with the other parts of an ensemble work as performed by the computer performer by way of electronic instrument patches that have been created, through sampling technology, to allow close emulation of acoustic instruments.  The creation of the MIDI files involves the molding of musical interpretations through the intricate programming of longitudinal dynamic shapes, vertical dynamic balances, rhythm durations, legato articulations, staccato articulations, variations in attack and release, vibrato, tempos and tempo changes, and the like, for all of the accompanying instrument parts of the ensemble.  Thus far, I have published the following such MIDI files:
