Additional Colorado-Specific Credentials

  • The Social Work Provisional (SWP) License is a provisional license that available only to master of social work graduates that work within approved Residential Child Care Facilities, as defined by the Colorado Mental Health Practice Act.   The SWP is used as a pathway to LCSW licensure.

    Steps to obtain SWP toward LCSW:

     

    Step ONE: Complete all MSW coursework & field requirements.  Obtain proof of your degree with either an official final transcript or a Certification of Masters Education form (signed off by the GSSW Registrar).

    Step TWO:  Complete the DORA SWP application, pay the fee and forward required documents & submit the Provisional Social Worker Verification Form.

    Step THREE:  Once DORA issues a SWP ID#, complete the supervision and experience hours for LCSW licensure.

    Step FOUR: Take the Juris Prudence Exam - The Colorado Mental Health Jurisprudence Examination assesses knowledge and understanding of laws and regulations set forth in Part 1 (Legislative Declaration) and Part 2 (General Provisions) of the State of Colorado Mental Health Statutes.   Even though you took this exam prior to your LSW exam, you will need to retake it seeing it expired after 1 year.  Register for the exam.

    Step FIVE:  Apply to take the CLINICAL exam through ASWB.  ASWB will confirm your eligibility to take the exam via email.

    Step SIX: Schedule, take and pass the CLINICAL exam through a Pearson Testing Center, as directed by ASWB.  

    Step SEVEN:  Report experience & supervision hours to DORA, to be registered as a LCSW. 

    Employment through a DORA approved Community Mental Health Exempt Facility as a pathway to LCSW licensure.  With this process, no permit or DORA registration is required in order to gain experience & supervision hours toward LCSW; however, your sole employment needs to be at an approved Exempt Facility during your licensure period.
