Steps to Become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

  • For social workers that want to work in a clinical, therapy setting or open a private practice, a LCSW is required.  There are mutiple paths to obtain your LCSW, see above instructions for (1) LSW or (2) SWC, prior to obtaining your LCSW. Both are great for different reasons based on your job search/employer, but both will get you to the LCSW.

All forms/instructions for DORA can be found here.

Option 1:  Licensed Social Work (LSW) to LCSW - Did you complete the LSW steps? See LSW steps here.

Step ONE: Complete your experience & supervision hours as a LSW.

Step TWO:  Retake the Juris Prudence Exam - The Colorado Mental Health Jurisprudence Examination assesses knowledge and understanding of laws and regulations set forth in Part 1 (Legislative Declaration) and Part 2 (General Provisions) of the State of Colorado Mental Health Statutes.   Even though you took this exam prior to your LSW exam, you will need to retake it seeing it expired after 1 year.  Register for the exam.

Step THREE:  Apply to take the CLINICAL exam through ASWB.  ASWB will confirm your eligibility to take the exam via email.

NOTE:  Please keep in mind that no school has control over licensure regulations, it is important to continue to be connected to DORA the regulatory body for any updates.
