Cities across the planet are grappling with a multitude of intractable social and environmental problems: unaffordable housing, deteriorating infrastructure, insufficient transit, food insecurity, climate change, drinking water, pollution, natural disasters, etc.
Sustainability has emerged at all levels of governance as a solution to cut the Gordian knot. Nearly all U.S cities have some kind of sustainability program, and one of the UN Sustainability Development Goals is to “Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”.
The environmental aspects of sustainability are clearly important, but as Agyeman’s concept of just sustainability shows, equity and justice are equally significant.
