• Scholarship and Impact

  • Recent research includes a mixed-methods, longitudinal study examining the implementation and impacts of service learning in middle school curricula. This study has yielded important findings regarding the implementation of an evidence-based intervention in a new context, from an after-school environment to the classroom.

Following the development of the Black Lives Matter movement, McBride led two studies: 1) an in-depth interview project examining the civic background and motivations of activists in Ferguson, Missouri, and 2) analysis of a nationally-representative panel survey, which included questions regarding perceptions of police and race relations and civic engagement following Black Lives Matter.  Publications are forthcoming from these studies.

McBride is a leader in the field of community engagement in higher education specifically, convening conferences and writing on the topic for the Chronicle of Higher Education and the Huffington Post. Prior consultancies include with the United States Corporation for National and Community Service, the United Nations Volunteer Program, and the Social Science Research Council. She has organized more than 15 conferences and symposia, including a recent think tank on the rise of social innovation in higher education and how to best apply the academy’s human capital in addressing entrenched social issues. An article on the topic is forthcoming in Diversity & Democracy, published by the Association of American Colleges and Universities.  A book project is also underway in partnership with Campus Compact and Stylus Publishers.
