These resources are intended to help current and prospective psychology students understand our degree requirements and experiential opportunities.

The word "internship" has a special meaning in graduate programs for psychology, but most undergraduates asking about internships are curious about gaining real-world experience in psychology. Currently, we have three formal ways for students to engage in structured experiential learning for course credit, which can count for a psychology major or minor. The first is to gain experience contributing to a research project run by a faculty member in our psychology department. (Some of these research experiences also include some exposure to clinical populations and procedures, and some do not.) The second is to apply for and participate in our field experience in psychology sequence, if you are potentially interested in a future career in therapy or counseling. The third is to look into our micro-credential program in psychology. In addition to these, you can see if any of the classes we offer have an attribute indicating it is a service-learning  class.

Outside of these carefully designed experiential courses, other students will seek out other experiences related to their interests or future career goals, either during a summer or during the school year alongside regular coursework. For example, our students with interests in pre-health fields often seek out formal internship programs offered by hospitals or in other medical settings. These are often available to college students over the summer, at hospitals in/near Denver or elsewhere. Other students might attend an internship fair, or might work with the Career and Professional Development office to identify opportunities to intern or shadow with a DU alumnus who has indicated they're willing to take on a current DU student mentee. It is extremely rare for psychology students to get course credit for these experiences which occur entirely outside of DU, but you can ask an advisor if you have an opportunity which is only possible if you receive course credit.

Outside of these resources, some students find opportunities using an external website that lists psychology-specific opportunities or look for any opportunities related to psychology (really, anything that includes helping people or managing data that come from people) at the DU volunteer opportunities website.
