    Transfer Students

GETTING STARTED AT DU AS A TRANSFER STUDENT

Welcome to DU! We're glad to welcome you here. Many students join DU with credit for equivalent courses taken elsewhere. The first step to checking your major progress is to see which courses are counted as equivalent courses and if you'd like to request that any courses that are counting for elective credit be counted for a specific course. (The request process for that is outlined below).

Transfer students are often reassured to hear these reminders:

    • Our psychology major (BA) fits very well into a four year plan (or equivalent with transfer credit)
    • Remember that at least 50% of your required credit hours for any major or minor must be taken at DU
    • All students need at least one minor (for the BA, two for the BS)
    • Your registration priority time, reflecting your priority for registering for classes, improves with time (often classes are most full the first quarter a transfer student registers). We recommend  trynig to register as close to your registration time as possible to maximize your choices.
    • You need to have your PIN deleted before registering for courses each quarter.

    APPLYING TRANSFERRED PSYCHOLOGY CREDITS

The University must approve for DU credit any courses you've taken elsewhere.

For each course you'd like to transfer, you must provide information about the class (e.g., university bulletin course description, syllabus, etc.). The more information you submit, the better.

    From there:

    • Check your Degree Audit  to see the status of your transfer credits (PDF).
    • At least 50 percent of the required credit hours for the major or minor must be completed at the University of Denver.
    • If you want to apply transfer credits to a specific psychology major or minor requirements at DU, you must receive submit the course for appproval through DU's transfer approval workflow in PioneerWeb (Student - Student Records – Request Coursework Approval).

    Study Abroad

Psychology advisers do not have any specific recommendations about where psychology students should study abroad. If your four-year plans allows for it, you should choose a study abroad program in the part of the world that interests you most. Much of the psychology learning that happens abroad happens outside the classroom. Similarly, if your plan to complete your major allows, we recommend that students take classes that are not offered by DU or classes that will reflect the culture of the study abroad country. Take advantage of the opportunity to observe and learn about another culture as much as you can!

Questions about study abroad can be addressed in individual, group or drop-in advising appointments, or by email. Very few students need to take specific courses abroad to stay on track to graduate with their psychology major!

Once you have selected a Study Abroad program, you might have questions about which courses will count for your psychology major or minor. The university keeps a list of courses that have been previously approved from Study Abroad programs. If the institution and course are listed here, your course will be counted for the DU course that it is listed as equivalent to. You can check this listing here:

    http://myweb.du.edu/mdb/du_bwcktart.P_DU_Choose_Geog_Area

If you have questions about whether a course you take abroad will count for your psychology major or minor at DU, keep in mind that almost all courses taken from a psychology department at a DU partner program will count at least as an elective towards your major or minor. If you would like to have a class evaluated for an equivalency, please login to the myDU portal and Request Coursework Approval. Note that a course description or syllabus is most helpful to have at this stage.
