Why add a Cognitive Neuroscience Concentration?

A concentration is one way to communicate to anyone looking at your academic record that you are interested in the intersection of Psychology and Biology -- which is the brain. It is often of interest to students who are pre-health (pre-med, pre-nursing, pre-physical therapty, etc), those interested in purusing graduate degrees in neuroscience, neuropsychology, or cognitive neuroscience, or anyone interest in the brain. Is is a way to complete your Psychology major or minor in such a way that you take more neuroscience-related classes in place of more general major or minor electives.

What do I have to major or minor in for the Cognitive Neuroscience Concentration?

You can earn this concentration—created by the departments of Biological Sciences and Psychology—by majoring in either of these programs. You then must major or minor in the other program as well.

Within the major and minor, you must take specific courses focused on the mind and brain, including the cognitive neuroscience specialty seminar in each department.

All psychology degree-seeking undergraduates are eligible for the cognitive neuroscience concentration.

The Cognitive Neuroscience concentration requires completing requirements (above and beyond typical major/minor requirements) for both a psychology and biological sciences major/minor. Please visit the Department of Biological Sciences bulletin page for information regarding the concentration requirements in biology.

Quick Guides to Cognitive Neuroscience requirements

If you're not sure what would change if you shift from BA or BS or from major to minor, or drop Cog Neuro -- here are all the options:

    2022-2023 BA Biology + Cog Neuro Options.docx

What is the difference between a concentration and a minor?

A concentration isn't its own topic of study the way a major or a minor is. It's a WAY to complete a major or a minor with a bit more of a specific emphasis.
