The following scholarship applications for current students are due early in spring quarter as part of the departmental scholarship process (common application in the my DU portal). Students should receive an email from financial aid with instructions on how to fill out the common departmental scholarship application.

    VANDERGRIFT UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP IN PSYCHOLOGY

The $3,500 Elsie Lincoln Vandergrift Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student who shows promise and accomplishment in psychology. This fund was established by Ms. Dorothy Helen Hanson to honor her friend and mentor, Ms. Vandergrift Benedict, a DU psychology student starting in 1905. For more on Ms. Lincoln Vandergrift's remarkable career, see here.

All psychology majors can apply. Preference is given to students who have fewer than 75 hours of University credit by the end of winter quarter. Students can apply by following directions for the departmental scholarship application in the myDU portal, which should be sent by financial aid, via email, late in Winter Quarter. Students will automatically be asked to complete required fields for any scholarships for which they are eligible. In addition, students must have at least 1 faculty member submit a recommendation for them and can be submitted here. A psychology faculty member is often best able to speak to the award critiera (promise and accomplishment in psychology), but any faculty member is acceptable.

The monetary part of the scholarship is disbursed during the subsequent academic year, beginning in autumn quarter.

BERNARD SPILKA UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP IN PSYCHOLOGY

The $6,500 Bernard Spilka Undergraduate Scholarship is awarded to the rising junior or senior judged most likely to make a significant contribution to the field of psychology.

This scholarship is named for Professor Spilka, who retired from the University of Denver in 1997, after 40 years of devotion to research in the field of psychology. In particular, he was dedicated to facilitating undergraduate teaching and research and for encouraging the advancement of all students—especially women and members of racial/ethnic minority groups.

Eligible students are psychology majors, have a 3.0 or above cumulative GPA, and have 75 or more hours of University credit by the end of winter quarter. Students can apply by following directions for the departmental scholarship application in the myDU portal, which should be sent by financial aid, by email, late in Winter Quarter. Students will automatically be asked to complete required fields for any scholarships for which they are eligible. In addition, students must have at least 2 faculty members submit a recommendation for them and can be submitted here. A psychology faculty member is usually best to speak to the award criteria (most likely to make a significant contribution to the field of psychology), but any faculty member is acceptable. The award committee pays close attention to the student's potential to impact or change the field in a positive way, above and beyond their ability to learn and apply current practices in the field of psychology.

The monetary part of the scholarship award is disbursed during the subsequent academic year, beginning in autumn quarter.

The awards below are handled outside of the departmental scholarship process, see below for more details:

    CHARLOTTE HENDERSON MEMORIAL AWARD

The Charlotte Henderson Memorial Award is in memory of Charlotte Henderson, who passionately and tirelessly supported the research training and trajectories of undergraduate research assistants in the Psychology Department of the University of Denver. Mrs. Henderson was a staff associate in psychology for thirty-six years. She performed her role with distinction; recruited hundreds of parents, infants and children for research participation; and supervised undergraduate and graduate student research in psychophysiology and developmental methods.

The Charlotte Henderson Memorial Award is intended to facilitate mentored undergraduate research participation and pursuit of independent research questions. Grant awards will be made to third-year undergraduate students (usually those who have completed at least 90 credit hours) majoring in Psychology. Preference will be given to students with identities traditionally underrepresented in higher education, including, but not limited to: first generation college students; minoritized race, ethnicity, or gender identity; or students experiencing low income. The research award has a maximum amount of $2500 per student, to support research expenses and may include a stipend (payment for time spent by the awardee doing psychological research).

Applications for AY 2023-2024 are due on Sunday, November 6 by 11:59 pm. To apply, please prepare 4 brief statements (1-2 paragraphs max) detailing: 1) what sparked your interest in psychological research and how it fits into your potential career plans, 2) the research topics or questions you'd be interested in studying, 3) how your membership in groups traditionally under-represented in higher education have impacted your ability to participate in research and 4) which faculty member from the Department of Psychology at DU might serve as a research metnor. It is not expected that you have worked with this person previously. Please also prepare a PDF of your degree audit to submit.

The awards committee may reach out to applicants and invite them to have a brief conversation to elaborate upon or clarify any of these responses. In addition, the awards committee may contact any potential research mentor you identify to ask them if they are willing and available to support an additional undergraduate in their current research program.

TROWILL AWARD FOR MERITORIOUS WORK IN PSYCHOLOGY

The $500 Trowill Award is an award and monetary prize given each spring to a graduating senior psychology major. It recognizes meritorious work in psychology.

This work may occur in a research lab, citizenship/committee work, field experiences, other areas of psychology or any combination of these.

Nominations are typically due in early April and can come from anyone—including self- nominations. To make a nomination, please email Dr. Kateri McRae at kateri.mcrae@du.edu the full name of the student, and indicate why this student should receive the Trowill Prize.

Please contact Dr. McRae at kateri.mcrae@du.edu, Curriculum Coordinator for the Department of Psychology, with any questions regarding these awards.

    SHAKLEE TROWILL AWARD

The Shaklee Trowill Award is named after two former Psychology department faculty. It recognizes an exceptional senior honors research paper. The awardee is selected from among the Psychology Department senior honor students, based on the quality of the research project, particularly the student's contribution to the research project. Award winners are selected in May by the senior honors research seminar instructor, with input from the student's faculty mentor.
