Objectives and Goals

  • Readers for Change sets out in:

    1. Introducing works of fiction and narrative nonfiction to promote conversations on a broad array of topics such as kindness, self-care, community, equity, diversity, social justice, healthy living, sustainability, interpersonal relationships, a psychological climate at school or at work, connections to nature, sickness and resilience, coping and courage, to name just a few;
    2. Providing a space where students share their views and reflect on the text and their own life experiences without fear of judgement and in a supportive environment;
    3. Creating an inclusive extra-curricular participation space for the rapidly growing online LIS program that has many avid readers and reading advocates;
    4. Inviting guest speakers (e.g., academic experts, distinguished LIS practitioners, writers, members of the artistic community) whose own work compliments the books and articles discussed to speak and join the discussion;
    5. Allowing room for collaboration amongst the members to choose topics of interest and take turns leading discussions;
    6. Supporting any initiatives that develop from the meetings;
    7. Creating an online presence to document the SIG activities;
    8. Growing into a community engagement group that will serve as a bridge for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and supporters nationally and internationally;
    9. Facilitating knowledge sharing to enable people in other programs and institutions to create groups of their own;
    10. Founding and rolling out a quarterly newsletter tentatively titled “A Bright New Idea” that will introduce the community of alumni and practitioners to new ideas generated in academia – by students and faculty – in the context of reading practices; this will serve as a professional development instrument and a point of the ongoing academia-field connection.
