  • Dr. Ortega is the founding director of the University of Denver Latino Center for Community Engagement and Scholarship, consortium of interdisciplinary faculty dedicated to creating and advancing knowledge that gives voice to the history, politics, culture, and legacies of Latino communities.

    She is an award-winning teacher who uses feminist pedagogy to teach courses on direct practice and issues of social inequality at the DU Graduate School of Social Work. Dr. Ortega has authored and co-authored numerous journals articles, book chapters and grant reports, and given presentations at state, regional, national and international conferences on child welfare, immigration, parenting, and education. Her work focuses on the consequences of structural inequity across different systems, client groups, and diverse people. Dr. Ortega received the 2012 Outstanding Faculty Award from the University of Denver Greek Life; 2010 Out Through the Mind Award and 2007-08 Outstanding Faculty Award from the University's Center for Multicultural Excellence, the University of Kansas 2002 Silver Anniversary Teaching Award, the 2004 University of Kansas Kemper Fellowship for Outstanding Teaching. She has served on the board of and on many committees for the Council on Social Work Education. She is the past president of the Association of Latino Social Work Educators. She was a Governor's appointee to the Kansas Advisory Committee for Hispanic Affairs. She is the Co-Editor-in-Chief of Affilia: Journal of Women and Social Work. She is proud to be a first generation Latina college student.

  • La Doctora Ortega mantiene la posición de directora fundadora del Centro Latino para Participación Comunitaria y Becas de la Universidad. El centro es un consorcio de profesores interdisciplinarios dedicados a crear y fomentar un conocimiento que da voz a la historia, la política, la cultura y el legado de las comunidades latinas.

    Ella es una maestra premiada que utiliza la pedagogía feminista para impartir cursos sobre la práctica dirigida a las cuestiones de la desigualdad social en la escuela de Trabajo Social de DU. La Dra. Ortega ha sido autor y coautor de numerosos artículos de revistas, capítulos de libros e informes de subvención, y a presentado en conferencias a nivel estatal, las conferencias regionales, nacionales e internacionales sobre materia de protección de la infancia, la inmigración, la crianza y la educación. Su trabajo es enfocado en las consecuencias de la desigualdad estructural entre los diferentes sistemas, grupos de clientes, y diversas personas. La Dra.
