• Background

  • Hello there, my name is Corey and I am a PhD Candidate in the DU Department of Geography & the Environment. I grew up in Kansas City, studied at the University of Missouri, then worked in various places as an English Teacher, Substitute Teacher, Math Teacher, Camp Counselor, and Outdoor Educator. Through my early study and work experiences, I became interested in how people interact with their surrounding environment. Currently, my research interests focus on how, and especially where, access to nature is meaningful in the lives of youth. I am particularly interested in how youth's perspectives of nature (an already elusive concept) inform approaches to building a sustainable future. Moreover, I consider how qualitative GIS research methods like story mapping can facilitate location-based storytelling about lived experiences.
