    Dr. Jaime A. Castellano is a nationally recognized and award-winning educator, principal,author, scholar, and researcher. In 2017 he was recognized as SENG’s National Educator of theYear. As a highly sought-after speaker, he is recognized as one of the leading authorities in theUnited States in the education of Hispanic/Latino students. He is a preeminent scholar andresearcher in gifted education and in identifying and serving diverse gifted students withparticular expertise on identifying gifted Hispanic/Latino students, gifted English languagelearners, gifted Native Americans, gifted preschoolers, and gifted students from poverty. Hiscurrent research is focused on working directly with gifted students with trauma, toxic stress,and adverse childhood experiences.

    Professional Learning class

    Culturally & Linguistically Diverse Learners in Gifted Education Professional Learning class
    When: June 14-August 8, 2021
    Format: 8-weeks; Asynchronous online class

    • Pre-Registration opens on: April 14, 2021
    • Deadline to register: April 28, 2021

    Purpose:
    This course is a Colorado Department of Education (CDE) approved Professional Pathway course that is aligned completely to English Learner standards and meets the 45 clock/ contact hour CDE requirement. Educators who complete this 8-week online course will receive documentation to meet the required CLDE recertification hours.

    FAQ's: Culturally & Linguistically Diverse Learners  in Gifted Education Professional Learning Class

    Is it videos and/or reading and questions?  Is it live (recorded) lecture?

    • Weekly assigned readings (usually 2 articles)
    • No live recorded lecture.  We do have embedded overview recordings which are 10-15 minutes each week.

    The overview states self paced, but will there be required check ins on specific days/times? 

    • This is an asynchronous course.  Self- Paced with due dates each week.
    • Each Module opens on Mondays.  8 total Modules.
      • First original discussion board post due by Thursdays.
      • Additional responses to colleagues in the discussion board due by Sundays.
      • Reading Reponses due by Sundays.
    • We have played with the idea of OPTIONAL check times over the 8 weeks but have not implemented at this time.

    What kinds of assignments will there be - questions to answer based on readings vs research based "stuff"?  Participation in discussion boards?  etc. 

    • Weekly Discussion Posts- 8 total
    • Weekly Reading Response assignments – 5 total
    • One Culminating Demonstration of Learning (DOL) assignment.  Not a formal paper but a Fast Fact document.   

    This course is 45 clock hour/contact.  So 8 weeks is looking at a total of 5 ½ hours a week of engagement in the course content which you will need Wifi to access the content, post, and submit.

    Foundations of Computational Thinking for Educators Professional Learning class
    When: June 21-August 1, 2021
    Format: 6-weeks; Asynchronous online class

    • Pre-Registration opens on: April 14, 2021
    • Deadline to register: April 28, 2021

    Purpose:
    This is a 30 clock/ contact hour course.
    It will cover the foundations of computational thinking, provide ready-to-use lessons by grade level for implementation with students, andeducators will create a scope and sequence to guide instructional practices tied to computational thinking.
