Department of English and Literary Arts

    WHO WE ARE

Our department considers literature as a site of possibility and brings together creative and critical thinking to the benefit of both. We focus on the history of literature in English and in English translation; the production of literature as a creative act; and the interpre-tation of literature as aesthetic, social, economic, cultural and/or political text. With sig-nificant attention to different styles of writing and literary/critical fields, our department emphasizes the diversity of literary arts.

    WHAT SETS US APART

The Department of English and Literary Arts occupies a distinctive position in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. English has two major components—crea-tive/performative and theoretical/literary historical. Students bridge the two areas while concentrating more in one. In addition, English has three separate constituencies—un-dergraduate majors and minors, MA students pursuing literary studies, and PhD students who focus on creative writing (poetry, fiction, and hybrid genres) or literary studies.
