  • Dr. Apryl Alexander is an Associate Professor in the Graduate School of Professional Psychology (GSPP) and Faculty Affiliate for the Scrivner Institute of Public Policy. She received a B.S. in Psychology from Virginia Tech and a M.S. in Clinical Psychology from Radford University. She received both a M.S. and Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from the Florida Institute of Technology with concentrations in forensic psychology and child/family therapy. In graduate school, she served as Assistant Director for the Family Learning Program which housed two programs—an evidence-based sexual abuse treatment program for children and adolescents victims and their families and an outpatient adult sex offender treatment program.

    Dr. Alexander completed a pre-doctoral internship at Patton State Hospital, the largest forensic psychiatric hospital in the United States, where she received training conducting specialized forensic evaluations on adults, including competency to stand trial evaluations, mentally disordered offender evaluations, and sex offender risk assessment. She also conducted individual and group psychotherapy with severely and persistently mentally ill defendants and co-led relapse prevention groups for sex offenders. Dr. Alexander completed a post-doctoral fellowship in forensic psychology at Minnesota State Operated Forensic Services (MSOFS), where she conducted evaluations with both adult and juvenile defendants, including competency to stand trial and competency to proceed evaluations, mental state at the time of the offense evaluations, general violence and sexual violence risk assessments, and repeat sex offender assessments.

    Dr. Alexander spent three years as an Assistant Clinical Professor at Auburn University working in supervising research and clinical work at the Accountability Based Sex Offender Program (ABSOP), a residential treatment program for adolescents adjudicated for illegal sexual behavior.

    Currently, Dr. Alexander primarily teaches in the Master’s in Forensic Psychology program at the Graduate School of Professional Psychology and serves as Director of the Denver Forensic Institute of Research, Service, and Training (Denver FIRST) Outpatient Competency Restoration Program, which provides outpatient competency education and restoration for low-risk, court-ordered adult defendants and juveniles. She is the one of the Founders (with Dr. Ashley Hamilton and Rachael Zafer) and former Co-Director of the DU Prison Arts Initiative, a program which provides therapeutic, educational creative arts programming to incarcerated men and women in Colorado state prisons.

    Dr. Alexander is an award-winning researcher. Her research focuses on violence and victimization, forensic assessment, sex offending, human sexuality, and trauma- and culturally-informed practice. Her work has been published in leading journals including Behavioral Sciences & the Law; Journal of Forensic Psychology Practice; Child Maltreatment; Journal of Child Sexual Abuse; and Sexual Abuse.

    Dr. Alexander holds professional memberships with the American Psychological Association (APA), the Association for Treatment of Sexual Abusers (ATSA), the American Psychology-Law Society (AP-LS), and the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI). She is also part of the Diversity Scholars Network.
