• New Admins

  • Welcome to the University of Denver Writing Center! We are thrilled to have you with us and look forward to getting to know you and your work this year.

Please do these three things as soon as possible but no later than Tuesday, September 3.

    • 1. As soon as possible when you arrive on campus, but no later than Wednesday, September 4, complete the New Hire Action items required by DU: completing a W-4, being sure to bring the required I-9 identity forms to campus to fill out your I-9, and completing any additional action items.

Plan for orientation activities during week 1.

    • As soon as we have everyone's availability, we will schedule a 2-3 hour admin orientation that will take place sometime between Sunday, September 8 and Friday, September 14.
    • You are also invited (but not required) to attend our orientation for new consultants on Thursday, September 5, from 3-6pm in the Writing Center in Anderson Academic Commons.
    • You will not work your regular schedule in week 1; instead, you will do the following paid orientation activities:
      • Admin orientation
      • Reading our 2019-20 handbook
      • Reading a couple of articles about writing center work and discussing them
      • Doing a partnered DIY library and resource tour
      • Doing a shadow shift with a returning admin to learn WC Online and the desk

Develop some context for the Writing Center and your work as admins

We have set aside time during weeks 1-2 of the quarter for you to do this reading, so you do not need to interrupt your summer to do it now. However, we know that some people like to read early, so we are including it here:

    • Notes to you from previous admins
      • A good way to get a sense of what it's like to work at the Writing Center is to hear from admins. We've collected short notes from several previous admins who talk about their experiences, share insights, and offer a little advice; take a look.

    • Writing Center 2019-20 handbook
      • We will have a printed copy of our handbook, along with course materials and other resources, for you when you arrive in September; but for now, we are linking an electronic copy of our current handbook here.
  • Returning Admins

  • First steps: Complete by September 1

Welcome back! We hope you had a rejuvenating summer and are ready to get back to school and work.

Please do these two things as soon as possible but no later than Tuesday, September 3.

    • 2. Complete the availability grid for admin orientation; this grid is for week one only. We want to involve you in the orientation for new admins so you can both meet the new admins and also help to introduce them to the Writing Center and our work. We will schedule an admin orientation as soon as we have everyone's availability.

    • Please let Juli know if you can work extra hours during week 1 for the following things:
      • Covering the desk with new admins shadowing you; you will show them the ropes, teach them WC Online, and so on
      • Reading an article about writing center work and helping to facilitate a discussion with the new admins

Re-read the "Admin" and "Writing Center as Workplace" sections of the handbook.

    • Writing Center articles
      • We will be asking the new admins to read two articles about Writing Center work, and we will give you paid time in week 1 to do this as well so that you can help to facilitate a discussion with them. However, you're welcome to read early if you like!
