  • Description

  • The purpose of the Estlow International Center for Journalism and New Media is to explore the ways in which the traditional roles of journalism - information-sharing, knowledge-gathering, serving as a watchdog on power – are finding new forms of expression and experimentation in the online digital environment. We are especially interested in how these practices of emergent journalism can be marshaled for the purposes of enhanced civic engagement, increased compassion and understanding, and efforts toward improved human rights for disadvantaged persons.

There are five aspects to the Estlow Center's programs:

    1. Awards, including the annual Anvil of Freedom Award given to a journalist who's made an outstanding contribution to democracy

    2. Educational events, open to members of the public and the university community (including one annual day-long event for professional development and university enrichment that aims to provide a forum for discussing issues related to the increasing role of the media in globalization, branding, politics, personal identities, and societal reorganization (what Benjamin Barber called "McWorld")

    3. Research projects (see the Estlow Center site for details)

    4.  Student involvement in research, teaching, and outreach efforts

    5.  Online resources
