• Introduction and Background

  • Heather Kennedy, MPH.

I am a doctoral student focusing on supporting adults and organizations who are engaging youth in creating community change. My current research is on understanding how adults change from engaging with various Positive Youth Development programs, policies, and practices. I am also very interested in educational reform and youth engagement in school decision-making. My goal is to conduct research in a way that authentically engages and empowers my youth and adult participants.

Prior to entering the doctoral program, I earned my MPH at the Colorado School of Public Health at the University of Colorado Denver with a concentration on community and behavioral health and BA in English at the University of Northern Colorado. My passion for youth engagement stems from my personal experience as a teen participant in a movement called Get R!EAL, Colorado’s youth movement against the tobacco industry. I also am youth organizer and have worked to improve community health through supporting policy advocacy efforts of adolescents across Colorado.
