    Associate Professor in Teaching and Learning Sciences

    Garrett J. Roberts, PhD, BCBA-D, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning Sciences at The University of Denver (DU) and the recipient of an IES Early Career Award in 2019. He graduated with a Ph.D. in Special Education from the University of Texas (UT) at Austin (UT-Austin). Prior to entering academia, he was a teacher in a range of diverse settings including in United States Peace Corps. in Africa and a special educator in grades K-6 in Hawaii and Oregon.

    As an educator and a lifelong student he has strived to gain a diverse background at the international and local levels. At the international level, he has worked as high school teacher for the United States Peace Corps in Marromeu, Mozambique as well as becoming a Fulbright-Hayes Scholar through my involvement in a project that spread literacy to rural Ethiopia. At the local level, he has worked as a special educator in rural Hawaii and Oregon with responsibilities that included providing Tier 2 and 3 academic and behavioral supports, working on the school-wide Response to Intervention (RTI) framework for both academics and behavior, and developing and monitoring inclusion support plans. By way of working in these diverse settings in the United States and abroad, he has broadened his experience base and therefore as an instructor of college level courses, he can bring a perspective that includes promoting school and student success through differentiated instruction, multicultural sensitivity, and family involvement.

    At UT-Austin, he was the project director of a National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) funded Learning Disability Resource Center (LDRC) under the the PI’s Dr. Jack Fletcher (University of Houston) and Dr. Sharon Vaughn (UT-Austin). As project director, he was responsible for many aspects of the project including leading a multi-site team (UT-Austin; UH) to develop and implement a multi-component reading with self-regulation intervention for students with reading comprehension deficits in Grades 3-5. In addition to NICHD funded projects, Dr. Roberts also worked on clinic-based research projects using applied behavior analyses (ABA) with students with Autism. Through the use of ABA in the school, clinic, and home, he become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst at the Doctor Level (BCBA-D).

    Currently at DU, he teaches courses related to curriculum design, single-case design, and special education for both future teachers and school psychologists as well as mentoring and advising students and conducting research related to students with reading and behavioral difficulties. Dr. Roberts’ is an Institute of Education Science funded researcher focused whose ongoing research focuses on intervention research to improve reading instruction for students with reading and behavioral difficulties. Additionally, his research includes extant data analysis on cognitive, linguistic, and behavioral characteristics, meta-analyses, and research to practice papers. 

    Across these experiences, he continues to work to develop and implement academic and behavioral interventions, provide academic and behavioral coaching, and work alongside co- investigators to better understand and support the implementation of reading comprehension interventions for upper elementary and adolescent-aged students with reading and behavioral difficulties.
