  • Biographical Description

  • I taught in the Department of English and Literary Arts from 1994 to 2022.

My home page has a few course home pages, writing samples, and advice:

I have published three novels, The River Gods, Still Life With Insects, and I Know Many Songs, But I Cannot Sing, and two collections of fiction exercises, The 3 A.M. Epiphany and The 4 A.M. Breakthrough. I have received Guggenheim, Whiting, and NEA fellowships, and had residencies at the MacDowell Colony, Millay, Yaddo, and the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown. My fiction has been anthologized in The Best American Short Stories and The Four-Way Reader. I studied at Carleton College and at City College of New York (with Donald Barthelme and Grace Paley).

I taught travel writing, contemporary historical fiction, and postcolonial fiction classes. About half my courses were creative writing workshops for undergraduates and graduate students. I didn’t like the usual workshop method, but I used it, in a limited form, imposing a wide variety of exercises on the process. I am a reader (and writer) who enjoys organic innovations in the form and content of fiction and poetry. By organic, I mean, experiments that develop out of the relationship between content and point of view. I also believe language is infinitely malleable, a live being in our hands, which deserves our great respect and curiosity.
