    Ancient Worlds

Professor Dean Saitta, Department of Anthropology

    Autumn 2019, TF 8:00-9:50

    Sturm Hall 154

This course uses the field of archaeology to (1) introduce you to variation in the way that people in different cultures generate meaning via written texts, artifacts, and other creative expressions, and (2) develop your ability to interpret these texts, artifacts, and creative expressions.  It investigates human belief and creativity in what we call “deep history”: the 50,000 years or so between the appearance of modern Homo sapiens and the rise of the first great civilizations of the Old and New Worlds.

Case material is drawn from human cultures located widely across time and space.  It includes material about Stone Age artists of Europe and the Middle East (Caveworld), ancient astronomers of England and North America (Hengeworld, Moundworld), and pyramid builders of Egypt and Mexico (Pyramidworld). The aim of the course is to give you a taste of variation in how humans have creatively reflected upon and expressed their place in the world across time, space, and cultural context.  It aims to expand your understanding of what it means to be human.
