  • Comprehensive Examinations

Each fall and spring, RMS offers MA and Ph.D. comprehensive examinations to students who have completed their coursework.

MA students take a one-day on-campus examination and sample questions are in the RMS handbook.

Ph.D. students can choose between two comprehensive examination options: an "on-campus" examination and a "take-home" examination. The on-campus takes place over two days and sample questions are in the RMS handbook. The take-home examination comprises two parts which students have almost two months to complete.  Details are below.

  • Student Annual Reviews

  • Student Annual Review Directions

Each May, the RMS faculty hold annual review meetings with students to discuss their academic progress, set goals, and receive feedback on their learning experience in our program.  Each student receives a written summary of the meeting.  Usually students in their first year meet with all RMS faculty, while students with more years in the program meet with 2 faculty.  Some students who are close to graduation will not need to meet, although they should feel free to request a meeting.  Prior to the annual review period, each student receives an invitation to participate in their annual review as well as directions for completing a survey that asks questions about progress in the program, various accomplishments, perceptions of strengths and weaknesses, etc.  Then, RMS faculty send all students a few questions (see "Pre review questions" document) to think about in preparation for their review meetings so that our time together (about 20 minutes) is optimized.
