• Graduation and Commencement Definitions

Commencement: Commencement is the symbolic ceremony held by the University to mark the beginning of your new professional life. DU holds commencement ceremonies twice each year  (June and August).

    • The act of participating in the commencement ceremony does not mean you have completed/earned your degree.

Participating: The act of participating in the commencement ceremony; sometimes referred to as “walking,” in reference to crossing the stage during commencement ceremony.

Graduation or to graduate: Graduation marks the completion and formal conferral of an academic degree.

    • This is when DU officially confers your degree. It means your degree is reflected on your transcript and is a part of your record. This happens only after final grades are posted and successful completion of all degree requirements are verified. Grades are posted after Commencement.
  • Graduation General Process
    1. Students apply for graduation via MyDU.
    2. The week after registration of the final quarter, the GSSW Registrar’s Office manually reviews the records and degree requirements for all students who applied to graduate. All students will be notified by week 1 of their final quarter.
    3. When grades post, the GSSW Registrar’s Office begins the degree certification process.
    4. Degrees are awarded 4-6 weeks after grades post.
    5. Diplomas are mailed out 8 weeks after grades post

During week 10, students will be sent a reminder of the graduation process and what happens next.

  • Graduation Application Deadlines
